What is Netmasking?
Netmasks (or subnet masks) are a shorthand for referring to ranges of consecutive IP addresses in the Internet Protocol. They used for defining networking rules in e.g. routers and firewalls. Every entity (server or client) communicating on the internet will have a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address.

What is a 32 subnet?
Generally speaking, /32 means that the network has only a single IPv4 address and all traffic will go directly between the device with that IPv4 address and the default gateway. The device would not be able to communicate with other devices on the network.
Why is subnet mask always 255?
A subnet mask is a 32-bit number created by setting host bits to all 0s and setting network bits to all 1s. The “255” address is always assigned to a broadcast address, and the “0” address is always assigned to a network address. Neither can be assigned to hosts, as they are reserved for these special purposes.
Why is it called subnet mask?
It is called a subnet mask because it is used to identify network address of an IP address by perfoming a bitwise AND operation on the netmask. A Subnet mask is a 32-bit number that masks an IP address and divides the IP address into network address and host address.
What is a 255.255 255.0 subnet?
A subnet mask of 255.255. 255.0 allows for close to 256 unique hosts within the network (since not all 256 IP addresses can be used). This is the default subnet mask used by Class B networks and provides up to 65,536 IP addresses (256 x 256). The largest Class A networks use a subnet mask of 255.0.
What is a 27 subnet?
/27 — 8 Subnets — 30 Hosts / Subnet Network # IP Range. Broadcast. .0.

What is a 31 subnet used for?
A 31-bit subnet mask is often used for an interface that is the endpoint of a point-to-point network. The use of 31-bit subnet masks for IPv4 point-to-point links is described in RFC 3021.
What does the mask 255.255 0.0 tell you?
It is a 32-bit number that distinguishes each octet in the IP address. For example, as depicted in Table 4.9, 255.255. 0.0 is a standard Class B subnet mask, since the first two bytes are all ones (network) and the last two bytes are all zeros (host).
Can an IP address end in 0?
For example, IP addresses of networks with subnet masks of at least 24 bits ending in . 0 or . 255 can never be assigned to hosts. Such “last” addresses of a subnet are considered “broadcast” addresses and all hosts on the corresponding subnet will respond to it.
